Research Interests

Research in my laboratory include both basic and translational projects focused primarily on respiratory disease. One research area is understanding the pathogenesis of respiratory virus infections, focusing on the role of dendritic cells and T lymphocytes in the disease process. The improved understanding of these cells in the host-pathogen interactions will be applied to vaccine and antiviral drug development. A cross-protective vaccine tor prevention and treatment of Gram-negative healthcare-associated infections is a second research area. Development of a point-of-care diagnostic kit to differentiate viral and bacterial respiratory infections is underway, using immunologic biomarkers as analytes. Multiple natural products are currently under investigation for efficacy in prevention and treatment of respiratory and dermal disease. Primary technologic capabilities used in the lab include culture and functional assays of various transformed and primary epithelial and immune cells; growth and infection studies using multiple viruses and bacteria; protein purification and analysis; flow cytometry; immunoassays; vaccine antigen design and immunogenicity testing; and fluorescent microscopy.

Katherine Jamison, PharmD, BCPS
Associate Dean for Pre-Clinical Medical Education
Associate Professor for Pharmacology

After graduating from pharmacy school in 2009, Dr. Jamison worked in retail pharmacy for 2 years before pursuing her residency. She completed her PGY-1 Pharmacy Practice Residency from 2011-2012 at the Salem VA Medical Center then moved on to become a Clinical Pharmacy Specialist in Primary Care from 2012-2015 where she focused on outpatient management of hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipidemia and HIV/AIDS. In 2015, she changed positions to become the Infectious Disease Clinical Pharmacy Specialist and to help the facility grow the antimicrobial stewardship program. Dr. Jamison also managed patients in the outpatient HIV and Hepatitis C Clinics, assisted with implementation of an Outpatient Parenteral Antimicrobial Therapy (OPAT) monitoring program, and served as a preceptor for both pharmacy students and residents. She served as the facility's PGY-1 Pharmacy Practice Residency Program Director from July 2014 through October 2015 and was a preceptor for pharmacy students from VCU and Shenandoah University Schools of Pharmacy. Through being a preceptor, Dr. Jamison realized how much she enjoyed educating students and residents in these roles, so she changed career paths to pursue academia at VCOM.

Research Interests

My research focuses on developmental and reproductive toxicity, particularly aimed at preventing birth defects. I am interested in the maternal and paternal influences on fetal development of the nervous and immune systems. I examine how parental environmental exposures, nutrition, and the microbiome alter development, with an emphasis on folic acid, and common quaternary ammonium disinfectants and cleaners.
