Albert Kozar

Portrait of Albert Kozar
Albert J Kozar, DO, FAOASM, R-MSK
Professor for Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine and Sport Medicine; Director of the Osteopathic Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine (ONMM) Residency

Dr. Kozar is board certified in neuromusculoskeletal medicine (NMM-OMM), sports medicine and family medicine, and was conferred a Fellow of American Osteopathic Academy of Sports Medicine in 2009. He spends 60% of his time practicing neuromusculoskeletal medicine exclusively, with a 50-50 mix of sports medicine and acute and chronic pain management. In addition, he is a registered musculoskeletal sonographer.

In his academic role, he serves as VCOM’s Program Director for the ONMM3 Residency, where he is also Professor, OMM & Sports Medicine and teaches in the PPC-OMM course for students. His role has moved more to a clinician researcher and has several ongoing intramurally and extramurally funded projects.

Dr. Kozar’s interests lie in neuromuscular control of functional rehabilitative approaches, diagnostic and therapeutic uses of musculoskeletal ultrasound (MSK), and osteopathic manipulative treatment, as well as regenerative therapies. Dr. Kozar has frequently lectured nationally on these topics at the annual conferences of American Academy of Osteopathy (AAO), American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM), American Osteopathic Academy Sports Medicine (AOASM), American Association of Orthopaedic Medicine (AAOM), and National Procedures Institute (NPI).

A teacher of MSK ultrasound with the group MSKUS.com since 2009, Dr. Kozar teaches diagnostic and cadaver injection ultrasound courses seven or eight times per year nationally and internationally. Prior to joining VCOM in fall 2015, he was in private practice since 2002 with Valley Sports Physicians in Avon, CT and was a Team Physician for The University of Hartford and area high schools.

Research Interests

Research in my laboratory include both basic and translational projects focused primarily on respiratory disease. One research area is understanding the pathogenesis of respiratory virus infections, focusing on the role of dendritic cells and T lymphocytes in the disease process. The improved understanding of these cells in the host-pathogen interactions will be applied to vaccine and antiviral drug development. A cross-protective vaccine tor prevention and treatment of Gram-negative healthcare-associated infections is a second research area. Development of a point-of-care diagnostic kit to differentiate viral and bacterial respiratory infections is underway, using immunologic biomarkers as analytes. Multiple natural products are currently under investigation for efficacy in prevention and treatment of respiratory and dermal disease. Primary technologic capabilities used in the lab include culture and functional assays of various transformed and primary epithelial and immune cells; growth and infection studies using multiple viruses and bacteria; protein purification and analysis; flow cytometry; immunoassays; vaccine antigen design and immunogenicity testing; and fluorescent microscopy.

Katherine Jamison

Portrait of Katherine Jamison
Katherine Jamison, PharmD, BCPS
Associate Dean for Pre-Clinical Medical Education
Associate Professor for Pharmacology

After graduating from pharmacy school in 2009, Dr. Jamison worked in retail pharmacy for 2 years before pursuing her residency. She completed her PGY-1 Pharmacy Practice Residency from 2011-2012 at the Salem VA Medical Center then moved on to become a Clinical Pharmacy Specialist in Primary Care from 2012-2015 where she focused on outpatient management of hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipidemia and HIV/AIDS. In 2015, she changed positions to become the Infectious Disease Clinical Pharmacy Specialist and to help the facility grow the antimicrobial stewardship program. Dr. Jamison also managed patients in the outpatient HIV and Hepatitis C Clinics, assisted with implementation of an Outpatient Parenteral Antimicrobial Therapy (OPAT) monitoring program, and served as a preceptor for both pharmacy students and residents. She served as the facility's PGY-1 Pharmacy Practice Residency Program Director from July 2014 through October 2015 and was a preceptor for pharmacy students from VCU and Shenandoah University Schools of Pharmacy. Through being a preceptor, Dr. Jamison realized how much she enjoyed educating students and residents in these roles, so she changed career paths to pursue academia at VCOM.
