Lin Kang, PhD, and Pawel Michalak, PhD, both from Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine’s (VCOM) Louisiana campus in Monroe, LA, recently published their research about the evolution of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus in “Cell,” in conjunction with their colleagues from Virginia Tech. SARS-CoV-2 is responsible for the COVID-19 outbreak.

The 2021 Virtual SNMA Annual Medical Education Conference (AMEC) was from April 1st – April 4th. At this convention, Jeanne Nwagwu, MBS continued in the position of Region VI Director. At the 2021 AMEC, medical students and professionals attended a wide range of educational and networking events. It is consistently the largest gathering of underrepresented minority medical students at any time of the year in any place in the nation.
Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM) has added an interview agreement with Centenary College in Shreveport, LA, to its growing list of partnerships with collegiate institutions across the country. The new agreement provides a guaranteed on-campus interview at one of four VCOM campuses for Centenary students who meet both the general admission requirements for the medical college and a set of additional benchmarks, including GPA, competitive MCAT scores and community service hours.

VCOM-Louisiana, the newest branch of The Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine, located on the campus of the University of Louisiana Monroe (ULM), held their inaugural White Coat Ceremony for the Class of 2024 on Saturday, April 10, 2021. This celebration was the very first osteopathic white coat ceremony to be held in the state of Louisiana.
On Saturday, April 17, VCOM-Carolinas hosted a Pediatric and Neonatal Bootcamp course for second year medical students. The course was taught by pediatric faculty at VCOM-Carolinas, and was directed by Hanna Sahhar, MD, FAAP, FACOP, Discipline Chair for Pediatrics.
Heath A. Parker, DO, has been named as the new campus Dean for the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine Auburn Campus (VCOM-Auburn). John Lucas, DO, the current senior vice president for institutional advancement and administration at the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM) has been serving as interim campus dean during the national search for a permanent Auburn campus Dean. Parker will begin his role at VCOM-Auburn on June 1, 2021.

VCOM-Louisiana celebrated its second-annual Accepted Students Day on Saturday, March 27, for the incoming class of 2025. A half virtual, half in-person format, this year’s Accepted Students Day marked the first event at the new VCOM campus that was open to outside visitors.

A new guaranteed admissions interview agreement between Indian River State College (IRSC) and Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM) makes it easier for IRSC Bachelor’s Degree in Biology students to train to be a physician. Under the terms of the partnership, qualified IRSC students who demonstrate high achievement are guaranteed an admissions interview to VCOM after successfully following a distinct academic protocol.
