Pisacano Scholars Leadership Program

 

Amount: Up to $7,000 a year for four years ($28,000 maximum)

The Pisacano Scholars Leadership Program provides educational programs, leadership training and funding for outstanding medical students for a four-year period beginning in the the final year of medical school and through three years of residency training in Family Medicine. The Foundation is especially interested in students who exhibit the highest levels of commitment, skill, compassion and leadership. Although the scholarships are intended to reduce the level of medical-school-related debt, financial need is not a consideration.

Eligibility

  • Only applicants who will be entering their fourth year (full-time), in the Fall, in a U.S. medical school will be considered.  Applicants must have declared family medicine as their specialty
  • Applicants will be judged on commitment to family medicine, leadership qualities, academic performance, interpersonal skills, communication skills, and involvement in serving others. 
  • The Foundation Board requires each applicant to complete an interview with a local family physician.

Notification of award decisions will be in October

Who is eligible to apply?

Applicants must meet all the following criteria to be eligible for this scholarship:•

Be a resident of the 50 United States, Puerto Rico or the District of Columbia.•

Be a graduate student or be a college senior who will be enrolling in graduate school during the academic year.•

Provide proof of enrollment to a graduate program in medical school, nursing, and/or pharmacy. •

Have one or more years of school remaining.

J. Michael Bernardo Medical Mission Endowed Fund

The J. Michael Bernardo Medical Mission Endowed Fund is named in memory of J. Michael Bernardo, a member of the Class of 2010, who tragically lost his life in 2009 while serving on a Dominican Republic medical mission. The scholarship was established by his family and friends as a lasting memorial to Mike. Awards are made to OMS3 and OMS4 students who complete medical rotations of at least a month in the Dominican Republic.

National Health Service Corps Scholarship Program

 

Amount: Tuition and Required Fees + Monthly Stipend

The purpose of the National Health Service Corps (NHSC) Scholarship Program (SP) is to provide scholarships to students pursuing primary care health professions training in return for a commitment to provide primary health services in a Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA).

In return for scholarship awards, scholars commit to providing primary care health services to underserved communities. The program provides support to students who seek financial assistance to complete primary care health professions education.

The NHSC SP pays for tuition and various other reasonable education-related costs and also provides a monthly stipend to assist with living expenses in exchange for a 1-year service commitment for each year of scholarship award with a 2-year minimum and a 4-year maximum.

Application cycle typically opens each Spring.

Army National Guard Health Professions Scholarship Program

The Armed Forces Health Professions Scholarship Program (HPSP) will pay for tuition,

fees, books, health insurance, some equipment, and also provides a living stipend. In

return for the scholarship, recipients must serve a minimum of one year for each year

the scholarship is received. The Army National Guard also has additional stipend and

loan repayment programs.

Virginia Tuition Assistance Grant (VTAG)

The state of Virginia funds the Virginia Tuition Assistance Grant (VTAG) each year to Virginia domicile students. There is a required application, which can be submitted in paper or electronic form. The eligibility definition for "domicile" is different than basic residency, so we encourage all incoming students to apply to have their status evaluated. If awarded, the VTAG will renew automatically for a total of up to four years. The award amount changes every year.

Howard G. Lapsley Memorial Scholarship

 

Amount: Varies

Scholarships are awarded yearly by the Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center Board of Directors to provide financial aid to one or more needy candidates matriculating in a program for a career degree in the study of medicine or osteopathy.

A resident of Plainfield, New Jersey, Howard G. Lapsley was dedicated to improving the quality of life for all mankind. He was an inventor, electrical engineer, volunteer and member of the adjunct Medical Staff of Muhlenberg from 1957 to 1967. He is most noted for inventing multiple oxygenating devices for the fast care of mass disaster victims. As a memorial to her brother, Josephine Lapsley provided for the establishment of the Howard G. Lapsley Memorial Scholarship.

Selection Process

The program, administered by a committee, reviews applications and makes final selections. The scope of the scholarship is not limited to tuition, but may also include such fees as those for board, lodging, travel, meals, books and supplies required pursuant to the core curriculum.

Eligibility

  • Candidates must have been raised (attended or eligible to attend elementary or secondary school) in one of these communities: Union County Clark, Fanwood, Garwood, Plainfield, Scotch Plains, Westfield Somerset Count Bridgewater, Bound Brook, Green Brook, North Plainfield, Somerville Middlesex County Dunellen, Edison, Iselin, Metuchen, Middlesex, Piscataway, South Plainfield; temporary residence while attending college or medical school does not qualify for this purpose.
  • Candidates shall be eligible for degree in medicine from an accredited medical or osteopathic school. Matriculating students in the first through last year may apply.
  • Candidates shall demonstrate financial need
  • Candidates are required to provide the Board with the FAFSA financial statement
  • Candidates must complete and return the application and financial statement forms by May 1 of the year in which they wish to be considered for the scholarship assistance.
