Howard Levine Memorial Scholarship

 

The Howard Levine Memorial Scholarship was established in 2005 by family and friends of the late Howard Levine, DO. Dr. Levine practiced for many years in New Jersey and is remembered as compassionate and altruistic, as well as dedicated to the profession of osteopathic medicine. This scholarship is awarded annually to a student who has been a resident of New Jersey and who best embodies the osteopathic values.

William B. and Ann F. Holtzman Endowed Medical Scholarship Fund

The William B. and Ann F. Holtzman Endowed Medical Scholarship Fund was established by the donors for a second, third, or fourth year medical student in good academic standing at VCOM. Preference is given to a student who plans to do primary care (Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Pediatrics or OB-GYN) and is a student whose home residence is from an area where Holtzman Oil Corporation does business. Holtzman Corporation currently operates in many locations in Virginia, West Virginia and Maryland.

Latonya M. Hendricks Carter, DO, Memorial Scholarship

 

In recognition of Dr. Hendricks Carter's commitment to VCOM and her profession, the family and the College created a scholarship in her name. The Dr. Latonya M. Hendricks Carter Scholarship will provide scholarships to richly diverse students enrolled at VCOM.

Founded by Eugene M. Bane, Jr., OD, in recognition of the positive relationship between osteopathic physicians and the profession of optometry, this scholarship is awarded to a VCOM-Virginia student who is committed to practice primary care in the Commonwealth of Virginia, and preference is given to a student originally from Buchanan County, Virginia.

Named in honor of Blake E. Fought, the son of Mark and Amy B. Fought, DO, Class of 2008, this scholarship was established by the friends and family within the VCOM community to provide a lasting memorial to Blake and as a tribute to the Fought family.  The scholarship is available to a third or fourth year medical student in good academic standing at VCOM who has a child residing with him or her.

The William G. Anderson, DO, Scholarship was established by VCOM to honor the outstanding professional and public career of VCOM’s Founding Board of Director, Dr. William G. Anderson. His career included roles as a civil rights leader, osteopathic physician, surgeon, educator and hospital administrator. This scholarship recognizes an exceptional student at VCOM at each of the four VCOM campuses who demonstrate leadership in supporting a diverse student body and principles and practices of osteopathic medicine. The student must also be fully committed to addressing the educational, societal and health needs of richly diverse populations.

Standardized Patients

A Standardized Patient (SP) is someone who is trained to portray a scripted medical scenario in a simulated clinical setting. They must accurately and consistently portray specific emotions, behaviors and disease symptoms while interacting with students during a simulated patient encounter. A standardized measuring tool is utilized following each encounter to assess the student in the Humanistic domain.

Whitney started working for VCOM in 2012 as the Admissions Coordinator for the Virginia Campus. In 2014, she relocated to Spartanburg to work for our Carolinas Campus as the Director of Admissions. After two years of service for our Carolinas Campus, she returned home and served as the Assistant Vice President for Student Services at VCOM–Virginia. In 2020, she transitioned into the Associate Dean for Student Affairs role overseeing the Admissions and Student Affairs departments on the Virginia Campus.

Margaret and Jimmi Narong Palmieri Rural Health Scholarship

 

This scholarship was established by the friends and family of Margaret and Jimmi Palmieri for OMS2, OMS3, and OMS4 students whose career plan is to practice medicine in a town with a population under 15000 in rural Virginia or Appalachia. The recipient must have successfully completed the OMS1 year at VCOM, express a strong intent to practice in an area in rural Virginia or Appalachia with a population under 15000, demonstrate a compassionate and altruistic spirit, and demonstrate financial need. Only one scholarship will be awarded annually and can only be received once.
