Who or what has inspired you while at VCOM?

The faculty and my classmates at VCOM have been a tremendous source of inspiration for me. The faculty consistently goes above and beyond to support us by holding review sessions to clarify complex concepts, providing ample resources to ensure our success, and demonstrating their dedication to our education. Beyond academics, they show their commitment to our well-being by attending and participating in fundraisers, such as kickball and golf tournaments and VCOM Olympics. Equally inspiring are my classmates, whose unwavering support and encouragement create a positive, uplifting learning environment. Their dedication to their studies and helping one another overcome the challenges of medical school motivates me to be a better student and future physician.

How has the VCOM mission inspired you as a medical student?

The VCOM mission has inspired me to embrace the values of service, compassion, and a commitment to improving health in underserved communities. It reminds me that being a physician is about more than medical knowledge — it’s about making a meaningful impact on patients’ lives. During my time at VCOM, I have had the opportunity to put these values into practice. Volunteering with the Special Olympics deepened my commitment to promoting inclusion and supporting underserved populations. Additionally, as part of our curriculum, I participated in a community-based research project in a rural, underserved area of Virginia. My group focused on mental health in Covington, Virginia, which allowed me to see firsthand the impact of healthcare disparities and the urgent need for physicians who are committed to serving these communities. Lastly, as a VCOM ambassador, I have also had the privilege of visiting undergraduate universities and participating in open houses to share the importance of VCOM’s mission. These opportunities to give back remind me how fortunate I am to be a part of this community and inspire me to strive to be the best medical student and future physician I can be.

Who or what inspired you to study medicine?

My family, especially my mother, has been my greatest inspiration to pursue medicine. As an optometrist and dedicated solo practitioner, she built a practice where our entire family—my father, my brothers, and I— helped out to run the business. Growing up in that environment, I witnessed firsthand the compassion and care she provided to her patients, which sparked my passion for healthcare. My interest in osteopathic medicine began during college when I was a student-athlete playing soccer. Midway through my collegiate soccer career, I fractured my foot. Going through the recovery process as a patient, I saw how the team doctors and orthopedic surgeons worked diligently to help me achieve my personal health goals and return to the field. Their holistic approach to my care and the use of manual medicine in my treatment made a lasting impression on me. That experience with sports medicine solidified my desire to pursue osteopathic medicine.

Why did you choose VCOM?

I chose VCOM because I wanted to contribute to its mission of serving rural, underserved populations in the Appalachian region. Although I am originally from Raleigh, North Carolina, I have deep ties to Virginia. I earned my bachelor’s degree from the University of Lynchburg, where my academic advisor encouraged me to explore VCOM-Virginia. It was also at Lynchburg where I met my wife, who is from Roanoke. Through her, I spent a significant amount of time in the New River Valley, which reinforced my desire to attend VCOM-Virginia, knowing it would be a great personal and professional fit.

What do you enjoy most about living in the area around your campus?

What I enjoy most about living in Blacksburg is the opportunity to stay active while enjoying the beautiful area. I love running, hiking, playing soccer, golf, and rock climbing. I also enjoy walking my dog around the neighborhood and spending time with my classmates, tailgating, and going to breweries. The close-knit community, combined with the access to outdoor activities, makes it the perfect place to balance the demands of medical school while staying healthy, active, and connected.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I love spending time with my wife and our dog in my free time. I also enjoy watching sports, exercising, and catching up with friends and family.

Are you interested in a particular practice or specialty once you graduate? What has inspired your interest in this specialty?

I remain open-minded to many specialties, but I am particularly drawn to Urology. During graduate school, I conducted research focused on developing new therapeutic strategies to treat and prevent sexual and urinary dysfunction, which first introduced me to the field. While shadowing, I had the opportunity to observe many unique cases in the clinic and a wide range of procedures in the operating room, and I found this variety especially appealing. I enjoyed the balance between addressing immediate problems through procedures and building long-term relationships with patients over time. What stood out most was the opportunity to help people in ways that directly improved their quality of life, which I found incredibly rewarding.

Who or what has inspired you while at VCOM?

The anatomy faculty at VCOM are incredibly hands-on and such a great team. Going into medical school, I wasn't sure I'd enjoy anatomy as I'd heard it's primarily rote memorization. However, the faculty does a great job applying what we have learned to clinical impact. You can tell they're all so passionate about the subject, from embryology to arteries and veins, and I just love having the chance to learn from and work with them. I never thought I'd be interested in a surgical specialty, but I may have changed my mind from my experience in the Anatomy lab and lecture.

How has the VCOM mission inspired you as a medical student?

The VCOM mission statement of preparing globally minded, community-focused physicians has always resonated with me as a Blacksburg native. Growing up in this area, I experienced firsthand the importance of a tight-knit community. Throughout my years in Southwest Virginia, we got through so much together as a community - from snowstorms to nationwide tragedies. After my time in Blacksburg, I was able to explore more of the country and landed in NYC. It was here I learned the importance of a global perspective, and enjoyed being surrounded by so much culture. Not only that, but I realized that community can grow anywhere - the small towns of Southwest Virginia and the biggest city in the country. Based on these experiences, the VCOM mission statement perfectly fits my goals as a future physician. I want to keep the Southwest Virginia in me and always be curious to understand more of the world.

Who or what inspired you to study medicine?

My mom and I have a typical mother-daughter relationship. Growing up, we were each other's best friends and greatest enemies at times. Nowadays, she's my mentor for everything in life. As a physician herself, she has always been my inspiration. I've not known anyone to be as courageous, strong, independent, and resilient as her, and I am proud to follow in her footsteps and become a doctor who cares deeply, thinks critically, and always has fun with her patients.

Why did you choose VCOM?

I chose VCOM because Blacksburg is home to me. I can't imagine a better haven to study and learn than here. Not only that, but I knew the education I would receive would be top-notch, and the professors have totally lived up to that expectation. I was also particularly motivated by VCOM's mission statement, international mission trips, and community service opportunities when applying.

What do you enjoy most about living in the area around your campus?

The quietness and calm. It's perfect for focusing on tough material and learning effectively in order to become the best future physicians we can in the short time we have left to learn.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I love to run, which is something I never thought I'd say five years ago! I am not a natural runner or very fast, but running has taught me the importance of persistence and resilience. In my opinion, it's the toughest sport to break into but by far the most rewarding. The endorphins after a good run are always worth the struggle.

Are you interested in a particular practice or specialty once you graduate? What has inspired your interest in this specialty?

At this time, I'm still really open to exploring more. I think I am particularly interested in nutrition and GI from outside studies, but we haven't gotten to that block yet, so I'm eager to see how much I like it when we dive in. Because I have loved Anatomy, I'm also open to exploring surgery, though I never thought I'd say that going into school. What I know is that I've loved clinical medicine courses so far and am very fascinated by pathophysiology. Whatever I do, I want to apply all of this knowledge to solving problems and really understanding them on an individualized patient level.

VCOM, my family, and especially my husband, have been my greatest source of inspiration. His unwavering encouragement and support have motivated me to persevere through challenges and give my best. Additionally, my friends Esther and Michella have been incredibly inspiring through our group study sessions, which we started during block one. These sessions have not only been academically beneficial but have also created a strong sense of teamwork. Their dedication and collaborative spirit have inspired me to remain committed to my goals and to appreciate the value of learning together.

How has the VCOM mission inspired you as a medical student?

The VCOM mission has deeply inspired me as a medical student because it resonates with my journey of coming from an underrepresented community. Growing up, I witnessed firsthand the challenges faced by those with limited access to healthcare, which fueled my passion for becoming a physician who serves underserved populations. VCOM’s mission focus on addressing healthcare disparities and improving rural and underserved communities has not only reinforced my sense of purpose but has also given me the tools and opportunities to make a difference. It inspires me to work harder every day, knowing that I can contribute to creating a future where quality healthcare is accessible to everyone, regardless of their background.

Who or what inspired you to study medicine?

My journey to medicine was inspired by my experiences growing up in Nigeria and witnessing my mother’s dedication as a nurse in an overwhelmed healthcare system. One life-changing moment was in the ER when I saw doctors fighting to save a baby’s life. Although the baby didn’t survive, their determination moved me deeply and sparked my passion for medicine. Later, working with autistic children and advocating for underserved patients in the U.S. taught me the importance of empathy, resilience, and advocacy in healthcare. These experiences drive my commitment to becoming a physician who makes a meaningful difference in the lives of others.

Why did you choose VCOM?

I chose VCOM because its mission aligns deeply with my personal experiences and aspirations. Coming from an underrepresented community and witnessing healthcare disparities firsthand, I was drawn to VCOM’s commitment to serving rural and underserved populations. The emphasis on providing compassionate care and addressing systemic barriers resonates with my desire to make a meaningful impact in communities like the one I grew up in. Additionally, VCOM’s supportive environment, focus on community outreach, and dedication to training well-rounded physicians make it the perfect place for me to grow both personally and professionally as I pursue my dream of becoming a physician.

These moments are my way of unwinding and recharging. I cherish the laughter and closeness we share, and it's a reminder of what truly matters to me. Spending time with my family helps me stay grounded and reminds me of the importance of balance in life.

Are you interested in a particular practice or specialty once you graduate? What has inspired your interest in this specialty?

I am particularly interested in psychiatry because of the profound impact mental health has on individuals and communities. Growing up, I witnessed how mental health struggles were often overlooked or misunderstood, especially in underserved communities. This has motivated me to pursue psychiatry as a way to help those facing mental health challenges and reduce the stigma around it. I’m drawn to the complexity of the human mind and the opportunity to build meaningful connections with patients, helping them navigate their mental health in a compassionate and holistic way.

My peers and the exceptional faculty at VCOM have been a constant source of inspiration. Being surrounded by individuals from diverse backgrounds, all united by the common goal of mastering osteopathic medicine, has been a truly enriching experience. The VCOM community feels like a family, and it’s inspiring to witness how everyone supports and uplifts each other, despite the demanding nature of medical school. This sense of camaraderie has been invaluable in helping me navigate the challenges of my journey.

How has the VCOM mission inspired you as a medical student?

VCOM's commitment to producing community-focused physicians who are dedicated to serving rural and medically underserved populations was a major factor in my decision to apply. Now, as a student, I see how deeply this mission is woven into our curriculum and experiences. Every aspect of our education emphasizes the osteopathic philosophy, with a strong focus on treating patients holistically and giving back to the community. This mission has been a continual source of inspiration, guiding me toward becoming a physician who not only cares for individuals but also works to improve the broader health of underserved populations.

Who or what inspired you to study medicine?

I lost my grandmother at a young age to an incurable lung disorder, and her passing ignited my curiosity about medicine. This experience fostered a deep passion for contributing to medical advancements and, just as importantly, supporting individuals during difficult times. As my interest grew, I pursued opportunities to expand my understanding of patient care. One of the most impactful experiences was working with mental health patients, which solidified my commitment to studying medicine and becoming an advocate for my patients while working to break down barriers that limit access to healthcare.

Why did you choose VCOM?

VCOM’s mission and community are the two main reasons I chose to attend here. I am passionate about contributing to efforts that address health professional shortages and the unique challenges faced by rural and underserved communities. Additionally, after visiting the school multiple times, I experienced the strong sense of family that VCOM fosters. Seeing a diverse group of individuals united in their commitment to becoming compassionate osteopathic physicians was truly inspiring.

What do you enjoy most about living in the area around your campus?

I attended Virginia Tech for my undergraduate studies, so returning to the community I called home for four years has been an incredible experience. From the breathtaking scenery to the excitement of supporting the Hokies at football games, Blacksburg offers so much to enjoy and explore. Additionally, I love immersing myself in the community by participating in outreach events and giving back to the place that first nurtured my passions as an undergraduate and continues to shape my journey as a medical student.

What do you like to do in your free time?

In my free time, I enjoy playing the piano and working out. I brought my keyboard to school, and learning new songs has become a great creative outlet during the stressful moments of medical school. I also enjoy trying different sports and recently checked out the pickleball courts at Virginia Tech. Another favorite pastime is building Lego sets, it’s quickly become my go-to activity for study breaks and a fun way to recharge.

Are you interested in a particular practice or specialty once you graduate? What has inspired your interest in this specialty?

Psychiatry has always been a specialty that interests me. From my undergraduate studies in neuroscience to my gap year working in a mental health unit, I have developed a deep passion for mental health care and advocacy. As a mental health technician, I gained invaluable experience working with a diverse group of individuals, including underserved populations such as those experiencing homelessness and individuals from prison systems. I envision myself practicing as a psychiatrist who focuses on serving medically underserved communities. My goal is to help destigmatize mental health and break down the barriers that limit access to care for these vulnerable populations.
