The recipient must demonstrate compassion and altruism in outreach or patient care. Preference will be given to a student who shows interest in practicing Geriatrics.

The Scholarship, created by Garnett Smith, was established as a Mother’s Day memorial to three significant women in his life, including his late wife, Patsy, who was passionate about improving rural and underserved medicine. Preference will be given to students from Southwest Virginia and students who are inspired and committed to medical outreach and underserved communities.

Recipients shall be, at the time of receipt of the scholarship funds, a second, third, or fourth-year VCOM-Virginia medical student in good academic standing. The scholarship is restricted to a student who is from the counties of Buchanan, Dickenson, Grayson, Tazewell, Washington, and Wise, Virginia, the cities of Norton and Bristol, Virginia, and the city of Bristol, Tennessee, and Sullivan County, Tennessee.

Preference given for a VCOM-Virginia student with an undergraduate degree from the Artis College of Science and Technology at Radford University. The student should be at least a second-year medical student

Preference given for VCOM-Virginia students who graduated from Virginia Tech and Radford University and who were Division 1 Athletes, Student Trainers, or Members of the Spirit Squad.

Preference given for first year VCOM-Virginia medical students who are graduates from Bluefield State College, Emory and Henry University, Hollins University, New River Community College, Radford University, Virginia Military Institute and the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets.

Preference given for VCOM-Virginia medical students who graduated from a community college in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
