The mission of VCOM is to provide care to rural and underserved populations. I grew up in one of these areas and would like to one day return and provide much-needed care to the community. So attending a school that puts such a focus on these communities, whether through volunteering or outreach programs, lets me know that I will be fully prepared when I begin practicing on my own.

Who or what has inspired you while at VCOM?
The professors at Auburn are like no others. They quickly let us know that they will be in our corners supporting us no matter what our future holds. The professors all have open-door policies whether you need to meet and talk about study habits or if you need a "mom hug," as Dr. Anglin says. Their care for the students showed when the COVID pandemic started, and the students were moved to virtual learning; some professors would hold weekly check-ins with the class to check on our mental and physical health.

How has the VCOM mission-inspired you as a medical student?
The mission of VCOM is to provide care to rural and underserved populations. I grew up in one of these areas and would like to one day return and provide much-needed care to the community. So attending a school that puts such a focus on these communities, whether through volunteering or outreach programs, lets me know that I will be fully prepared when I begin practicing on my own.

Who or what inspired you to study medicine?
My volunteer experience with a home health/hospice agency truly inspired my desire to study medicine. My role as a volunteer was to provide caregiver relief so the caregivers could run errands or have some personal time. I would spend this time with the patients and listen to their stories from their past. Getting to know these patients personally showed me that my future was in medicine to continue building relationships and supporting others.

Why did you choose VCOM?
The first time I came to VCOM was for my interview, and I immediately felt that there was already a place for me at the school. The faculty/staff did not make me feel as though I was competing for a spot. Instead, they wanted to get to know me and support me as I continued my journey through medical school, whether I ended up at VCOM or not.

What do you enjoy most about living in the area around your campus?
The Auburn area has a nice mix of big city life and a small-town feel. There are always activities to do around the University if you want to be involved, but it is also spacious with parks if you want to spend some time alone. There is also plenty of amazing and unique restaurants.

What do you like to do in your free time?
School obviously takes up a lot of time, but when I have the time to break away, I like to spend time with my friends or playing video games with my little brother.

Are you interested in a particular practice or specialty once you graduate? What has inspired your interest in this specialty?
I am interested in Family Medicine because I want to provide primary care to underserved areas. Family Medicine allows me to see a wide array of patients every day and form long-term relationships with my patients.
