Our Past Fellows

2022 Sports Medicine Fellows

Thomas Grove, DO

Dr. Grove was born and raised in rural Nebraska and had an early love for athletics as he was a 4-sport athlete in high school. He completed his undergraduate degree majoring in biological sciences at the University of Nebraska Lincoln. While at college Dr. Grove also played linebacker for the Cornhuskers where he went from walk-on to scholarship athlete, received 4 varsity letters, served as Team Co-Captain, and was the recipient of the Team Character Award in his senior season. He then went on to work as a strength and conditioning coach for four years, traveling to over 50 countries and training hundreds of high-level athletes ranging from youth sports to the pros searching for what it means to find health and wellness while maximizing athletic performance. After that, he attended medical school at LECOM and completed his family medicine residency at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, TX where he was enrolled in the integrative medicine track and graduated with a departmental distinction in sports medicine. Dr. Grove is excited to bring his extensive athletic and osteopathic medicine background with him to VCOM/Virginia Tech to further expand his sports medicine training as a Hokie.

Jason Le, DO

Dr. Le was born in Vietnam and immigrated to Saint Louis, MO. He completed his undergraduate degree in Nutrition and Dietetics at Saint Louis University and went to medical school at ATSU School of Osteopathic Medicine in Arizona. After completing medical school, Dr. Le completed his Transitional Internship at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth. He continued further training in Flight Surgery and went on to take care of the Navy and Marine Corps pilots and air crew as a Flight Surgeon before finishing his career taking care of Student Naval Aviators. During his time with the military, he found his passion in Family Medicine, OMM and Sports Medicine, working with and taking care of the athletic military population and their families. After separating from Active Duty, he completed his Family Medicine Residency at The University of Hawaii Family Medicine Residency Program. He is excited to further expand his skills in OMM, MSK ultrasound and procedures to better care for his future community’s needs.

Patrick Ryan, DO

Dr. Ryan is a coastal Virginia native from Hampton, Virginia. His love for sports started in high school, where he played baseball, wrestled, and golfed. He completed his undergraduate training in Biology at Virginia Tech, where he was a member of the VT Club Baseball Team and also where his passion for Virginia Tech sports became apparent. He completed medical school training at VCOM in Blacksburg, VA, where he was a member of the sports medicine club which sparked his interest in sports medicine. He completed Family Medicine residency at LSU in New Orleans, LA. He has a fiancé, Crystal, and enjoys walking time with their chow-chow dog, Simba. He is excited to have this opportunity to continue his training at VCOM/Virginia Tech Sports Medicine Fellowship and help care for the athletes and community of Blacksburg. GO HOKIES!

Mohamed Shitia, DO

Dr. Shitia was raised in the small town of Prospect, CT. He attended the University of Connecticut where he received his undergraduate degree in molecular and cell biology. He later completed medical school at VCOM in Blacksburg, VA. He went on to complete his PM&R residency at Case Western Reserve University/MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland, OH. Dr. Shitia is very excited to be returning to Blacksburg as a sports medicine fellow at VCOM/Virginia Tech. In his personal time, he enjoys participating in recurve archery, soccer, tennis, traveling to ancient archaeological sites, and spending time with his wife, son, and dog.

2021 Sports Medicine Fellows

Olabode Agaja, DO

Dr. Agaja was born and raised in Cleveland, OH where he grew up participating in athletics such as football, basketball, track, and soccer. He obtained his undergraduate degree from University of Charleston where he was also on athletic football scholarship. He pursued his dream to be a physician at the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine. He went on to complete his pediatric residency at Authority Health in Detroit, MI where he worked as chief resident during his final year. Sports remained a pivotal part of his residency experience as he worked with young athletes in clinic and played intramural kickball and basketball during his spare time. His encounters with young athletes combined with his own sports experiences have lead him to his true passion of sports medicine. He desires to help athletes prevent injuries by incorporation of osteopathic manipulative medicine into his routine regimen. He also strives to help all athletes recover from injury and return back to peak playing form and he is humbled to have the opportunity to continue his sports medicine training as a Hokie!"

Reginald Pinder, DO

Dr. Pinder has been a resident of Virginia since he was a young child. He completed his undergraduate degree at Virginia Tech where his interest for sports medicine was ignited by their student athletic training program. He continued his medical education in Blacksburg where he attended VCOM before traveling to Riverside Regional Medical Center for Family Medicine Residency in Newport News VA. Dr. Pinder was humbled to return home to Blacksburg and continue his training where his love for sports medicine began. In his personal time, he enjoys kayaking, fishing, snowboarding, basketball, and being active with friends and family.

Lin Shen, DO

Dr. Shen grew up in the Silicon Valley area in Northern California. He received his undergraduate degree in Neurobiology, Physiology, and Behavior, minoring in Exercise Biology, from UC Davis and completed his medical degree at Midwestern University AZCOM. He completed a Traditional Rotating Internship in California and then finished Family Medicine residency training at Northeastern Health Systems and Cherokee Nation’s W.W. Hastings. He enjoyed expanding his Sports Medicine training at VCOM/Virginia Tech and working with the amazing faculty and athletes. He enjoys a variety of sports and being active with his wife and daughter.

2020 Sports Medicine Fellows

Scott Biehl, DO

Dr. Biehl was born and raised in Cleveland, OH prior to moving to Rochester, NY for college where he attended St. John Fisher College. After graduating, he went on to complete his medical degree at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in Erie, PA. He returned to Rochester, NY to complete his Family Medicine residency with a focus in Sports Medicine at the University of Rochester Medical Center. Following his Sports Medicine training at VCOM/VT, he returned to Rochester, NY to work as a Primary Care Sports Medicine physician within the Rochester Regional Health system.

Shan Fairbanks, DO

Dr. Fairbanks was born in the budding metropolis of Groveland, Florida before moving to Danville, Virginia to attend Averett University where he played football and obtained a degree in biomedical sciences. He then completed medical school at VCOM Virginia in Blacksburg. He then finished one year of general surgery at Arnot Ogden Medical Center before finishing residency at Riverside Family Medicine in Newport News, Virginia. Dr. Fairbanks was emphatic to start the VCOM/Virginia Tech sports medicine fellowship as sports have played a pivotal role in his life. In his free time, he is an avid dance dad and enjoys playing outside with his 2 children.  

Mary Mitchell, DO

Dr. Mitchell was born and raised in Orchard Lake, Michigan. She later completed her undergraduate training at Saint Mary's of Notre Dame where she served as captain and president of the Notre Dame/Saint Mary's Irish Dance team. This love of dance has fostered her passion in dance medicine. She completed her medical school training at Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences and residency in Family Medicine at McLaren Oakland in Pontiac, Michigan. She was excited to have the opportunity to continue her education at VCOM/Virginia Tech Sports Medicine Fellowship and continued skills in osteopathic medicine.

Jacob Turnbull, DO

Dr. Turnbull grew up in Pittsburgh, PA before attending West Virginia University for a degree in exercise physiology. He completed medical school at West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine and was the chief resident during his family medicine training at St. Mary's in Grand Rapids, Michigan. VCOM/Virginia Tech was the perfect fit for sports medicine fellowship as it had a mixture of college athletic coverage, ultrasound procedures, osteopathic manual medicine and teaching opportunities. An avid runner and former boxer at WVU, Jacob enjoys hiking with his wife Kaitlyn and 1 year old daughter Adelyn. 

2019 Sports Medicine Fellows

Bri Beach, DO

Dr. Beach spent her childhood in Vermont and Georgia before moving to Blacksburg, VA to attend Virginia Tech for her undergraduate degree. She then completed medical school at VCOM, Blacksburg, and residency at Carilion family medicine in Roanoke, VA. Dr. Beach was very excited to be "back home" in Blacksburg to complete her sports medicine training. She has spent the majority of her life playing many sports such as soccer, lacrosse, and skiing. Which has led to an interest in sports nutrition, osteopathic manipulation, and Olympic sports.

Matt Chung, DO

Dr. Chung was born in Flushing, Queens but grew up in Goshen, NY nestled in the beautiful Catskills mountains. He received his undergraduate degree from SUNY Geneseo and went on to complete his medical school and residency training in Family Medicine at West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine. Sports played an important role in his life including the introduction to his wife through the love of competitive rowing. He was humbled to continue his medical education at the VCOM/Virginia Tech Sports Medicine Fellowship developing lifelong professional and personal relationships. In his personal time he enjoys hiking, cycling, golfing and being active with family and friends.

Natalie Hyppolite, DO

Dr. Hyppolite is originally from Long Island, NY, but grew up in Melbourne, FL. She attended St. John's University in Queens, NY her freshman year of college where she competed on the Women's Volleyball team. Her undergraduate degree was completed at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville,FL and she received her Master's in Biomedical Sciences and Medical School Degree at UMDNJ-School of Osteopathic Medicine. She returned to Long Island for residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine. This past year she completed an OMM/NMM+1 Residency at Rowan School of Osteopathic Medicine in New Jersey. As a former collegiate athlete, she has a unique understanding of the vital role of the sports medicine team in the health and wellbeing of the student-athlete and was very excited for the year to come here at VCOM/Virginia Tech Sports Medicine Fellowship. She has special interests in traumatic brain injury including concussions, culinary medicine, osteopathic manipulative medicine and adaptive sports.

Woody Woodson, DO

Dr. Woodson graduated from Christopher Newport University in 2009. He then attended Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine, in Blacksburg, VA, in 2014. He completed his family medicine residency at VCU-Riverside Family Medicine, in Newport News, Virginia, in 2017. Dr. Woodson completed VCOM's NMM-OMM Plus-One residency in 2018.

2018 Sports Medicine Fellows

Brandon Eck, DO

Dr. Eck grew up in State College, PA and attended Villanova University for his undergraduate degree. He completed Medical School and his Residency in Family Practice at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. He’s spent most of his life involved in sports and was thrilled to continue his medical training in the VCOM/Virginia Tech Sports Medicine Fellowship. He has a special interest in endurance sports, concussion, sports nutrition, injury prevention and osteopathic manipulation.

David Leslie, DO

Dr. Leslie grew up in Michigan in the Detroit area. He received his Bachelors of Science degree in Human Biology from Michigan State University. He then completed a year of research at Wayne State University and the Detroit Medical Center before returning to Michigan State University, where he studied at the College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed his residency at McLaren Greater Lansing in Lansing, Michigan, where he served as chief resident. His interest in both osteopathic manual medicine and extensive sidelines experience led him to pursue a fellowship at Virginia Tech/VCOM. He was excited to be in Blacksburg and enjoyed all of the opportunities working with the VCOM faculty and students during his fellowship year.

Lauren Leslie, DO

Dr. Leslie was born and raised in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan. She completed her undergraduate training at Alma College where she also played basketball and received her BS in Exercise and Health Science. She then went to medical school at Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine. Following graduation, she went on to complete her residency in Osteopathic Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine at Michigan State University, serving as chief resident. She was excited to join the medical team at Virginia Tech, work with VCOM medical students, and obtain further training in sports medicine. Outside of medicine, Lauren enjoys playing sports, hiking and traveling.

2017 Sports Medicine Fellows

Nick Strasser, DO

Dr. Strasser grew up in Washington State. He attended undergrad at Wheaton College in Chicago, IL. While there, he studied vocal performance and received his pre-medical school certificate. He attended medical school at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine at Seton Hill, and completed family medicine residency at Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News, VA. Outside of medicine he enjoys swimming, biking, running, music, cooking and spending time with family.

Kevin Valvano, DO

Dr. Valvano, a New Jersey native, received his B.S. in Biology from Montclair State University, in Montclair, NJ. Immediately following his undergraduate studies, he continued on to the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine, in Lewisburg, WV, to attain his osteopathic medical degree. He then completed his Family Medicine residency at McLaren - Greater Lansing, in Lansing, MI, where he served as chief resident. He was excited to return to the east coast to complete his sports medicine fellowship at VCOM/VT.

Christina Wong, DO

Dr. Wong earned her bachelor’s degree at the University of Washington in Seattle and her degree in osteopathic medicine at Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences School of Osteopathic Medicine. She completed her internship and residency in family medicine at Puyallup Tribal Health Authority in Tacoma, Washington. Following residency, she traveled to Blacksburg, Virginia to complete a sports medicine fellowship while working with Virginia Tech and Radford University sports medicine departments and was an assistant professor in Family Medicine at the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Wong currently works at The Sports Medicine Clinic at Northwest Outpatient Medical Center in Seattle, WA. She has a special interest in the musculoskeletal system and uses musculoskeletal ultrasound to further enhance the diagnosis and treatment plans of her patients.

2016 Sports Medicine Fellows

Jennifer Albrecht, DO

A native of upstate New York, Jen Albrecht completed her dual Bachelor of Science degrees in Biochemistry and Human Nutrition, Foods & Exercise while playing volleyball for the Hokies.  She then earned her Doctorate of Osteopathy from Midwestern University’s Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine and went on to complete her family medicine residency at Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News, Virginia. Jen is currently practicing primary care sports medicine in Mooresville, NC while covering local high school teams and is looking forward to incorporating ultrasound into her practice soon. Her interests include osteopathic manual manipulation and sports nutrition and she continues to play sand volleyball and enjoy Lake Norman in her free time.

Lindsay Call, DO

Lindsay Call, DO, was born and raised in Christiansburg, VA. She attended Virginia Tech for her undergraduate training and received a BS in Biology and Psychology. She went to medical school at Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine in Blacksburg. Following graduation, she moved to North Carolina where she completed her Family Medicine residency at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She was elated to return home to pursue a Sports Medicine fellowship with VCOM and Virginia Tech. She has special interests in musculoskeletal medicine and women’s health. Outside of medicine she enjoys spending time with friends and family, including her husband and daughter, and watching sports.

Jos Edison, DO

Joseph Edison, DO received his BS in Exercise Physiology from Valdosta State University where he also played football for VSU and was part of the 2004 DII National Championship team.  Dr. Edison completed medical school at VCOM and residency training in Family Medicine at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center in Spartanburg, SC. Jos has always wanted to remain connected to the sports environment and was excited to join the medical team for Virginia Tech athletes, as well as work with current VCOM students.  Outside of medicine, Jos enjoys spending time with his wife, Kim and two sons, Tyler and Camden.

Mark Rolfs, DO

Mark Rolfs, DO was born and raised in suburban Chicago. After graduating high school, he moved to Seattle and attended the University of Washington for undergraduate studies, then went on to earn his Doctorate of Pharmacy from UW.  Dr. Rolfs completed medical school at VCOM in 2011 and a combined internal medicine/family medicine residency at St. Vincent Health in Indianapolis, Indiana.  Because of special interests in musculoskeletal medicine, osteopathic manipulation, PRP/prolotherapy and working with athletes – he opted to pursue a Sports Medicine fellowship.  He, along with his wife and four children, was very excited to be back in Blacksburg working with the community, the medical college and Virginia Tech athletics.

2015 Sports Medicine Fellows

Mina DeMarco, DO

Mina DeMarco is delighted to be returning to VCOM as a sport medicine fellow. Mina grew up in Wisconsin and completed her undergraduate degree in Microbiology at Mississippi State followed by a Master’s in Exercise Science. There, she was also a member of the cross country and track teams. She finished her medical school degree at Edward Via Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed residency at Lewis Gale Hospital Montgomery-VCOM in Family Practice. Mina’s interests include osteopathic medicine, musculoskeletal medicine, and sports nutrition. She was excited to work with students and be a part of the great opportunities here in Blacksburg.

Audra Ramsey, DO

A native of Iowa, Audra Ramsey, DO, completed her undergraduate education in Biology at Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa. She went to Des Moines University in Des Moines, Iowa earning her Doctorate in Osteopathic Medicine. She has lived in the Appalachia area for the last 5 years completing her Family Medicine Residency and working for Marshall University Family Medicine. With a special interest in Sports Medicine and Osteopathic manipulation, she decided to complete the sports medicine fellowship. Outside of medicine, she enjoys spending time outdoors, with family and friends, and watching sports.

2014 Sports Medicine Fellows

Tye Harrison, DO

Tye Harrison is a fellow for the VCOM/VT Sports medicine program. He completed a family practice residency in Conroe, Texas and an internship year in Charleston, West Virginia.  His undergraduate was in microbiology and was completed at Weber State University in Ogden, Utah.  He actively participates in soccer and basketball and enjoys spending time with his wife.  He was excited to work with students at the medical school and in the athletic department to help them be successful in their goals. 

Dwan Perry, DO

Dwan Perry is delighted to join VCOM as a Sports Medicine Fellow.  Dr. Perry received his undergraduate degree in Exercise Physiology from West Virginia University in Morgantown, WV and attended medical school in Lewisburg, WV at the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine.  He completed his traditional rotating internship at Westchester General Hospital in Miami, FL and then went on to complete residency training in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of Kentucky in Lexington, KY. Growing up in nearby Bluefield, WV, Dr. Perry was excited to be back in the area working with VCOM students along with the local high school teams and Virginia Tech athletics. His interests are mild traumatic brain injury, musculoskeletal medicine which includes the prevention, diagnosis, and rehabilitation of injuries in addition to team sports medical coverage, mass event coverage, and sports nutrition and fitness. 

Jennifer Trpkovski, DO

Jennifer Trpkovski grew up in the Detroit area of Michigan. She completed her undergraduate degree at The University of Michigan in Ann Arbor in Cellular and Molecular Biology. She then went on to perform clinical research at the University prior to completing medical school at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in Erie, PA. Dr. Trpkovski then returned to her home town to complete a family medicine residency at Botsford Hospital in Farmington Hills, MI, where she served as chief intern and as chief resident. Her passion for teaching and interest in research as well as osteopathic manual medicine led her to join the Sports Medicine Fellowship at Virginia Tech/VCOM. She was excited to be in Blacksburg and enjoyed the great experience working with the community, the medical college and the Virginia Tech Athletics.

Matthew Weirath DO

Matthew Weirath grew up outside of Chicago and completed his undergraduate degree at Marquette University in Milwaukee, WI majoring in Biomedical Sciences.  There, he also participated in ROTC and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the US Air Force.  He then attended medical school at the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine and completed his internship and residency at the Spartanburg Family Medicine Residency in South Carolina.   He has spent the last three years at Shaw Air Force Base practicing full scope family practice, where he was also medical director of the family practice clinic and director of ambulance services. He has remained active with local sports teams during residency and while in his military practice. Still, currently on active duty, Matt was excited to be selected to finally complete his fellowship year at VCOM/ Virginia Tech.

2013 Sports Medicine Fellows

Curtis Andrews, DO

Curtis Andrews, DO completed his undergraduate work at Weber State University in Ogden, Utah and attended medical school at Touro University in Nevada. He went on to an internal medicine and pediatrics residency at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, Massachusetts followed by his Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship at VT/VCOM in 2012.  Following his fellowship, he returned to South Jordan, Utah and where he is working in a small group practice of Med and pediatric doctors where he enjoys focusing on the primary care and sports medicine needs of the whole family. He still waves his VT flag throughout the year and wears VT gear to work on Fridays during football season! Dr. Curtis has been involved with the local high schools’ athletics programs as well as local amateur and professional boxing events as a ring side physician. His biggest accomplishment since graduating from his fellowship is completing three half Ironman races and two full Ironman races in the past two years. He loves being a part of the local triathlon club and helping members reach their competitive goals.

Neil Sparks, DO

Neil Sparks, DO was born and raised in Durham North Carolina. He attended Furman University where he earned a B.S. in Biology and later received a M.S. in Immunology from North Carolina State University. Dr. Sparks completed medical school at VCOM and his family medicine residency at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston Salem, North Carolina where he served as chief resident. His interests include, human performance, chronic disease management in athletes, osteopathic manual medicine, and resident/medical student education. He was excited to return to Blacksburg to continue his medical training at the VT/VCOM Sports Medicine Fellowship.

William D. Thomas II, DO

William D. Thomas II, DO received his B.S. in Biology and a B.S. in Health Sciences from Shenandoah University in Winchester, Virginia. He then served in the U.S. Navy for several years. In 2003 he was accepted to the Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine where he graduated with his medical degree in 2007. Dr. Thomas completed his osteopathic internship and then Internal Medicine and Pediatrics residency at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, Pennsylvania. He was excited to VCOM and VT for his Sports Medicine Fellowship. His interests include: osteopathic manipulation, endurance sports and conditioning, and injury prevention.

2012 Sports Medicine Fellows

Stephanie Aldret, DO

Stephanie Aldret, DO received her B.S. in Health and Sports Sciences from the University of Oklahoma in Norman, Oklahoma, and a B.S. in Chemistry/Forensic Science from the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond, Oklahoma.  She then received her Doctorate in Osteopathic Medicine from Oklahoma State University College of Osteopathic Medicine in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 2008.  Dr. Aldret completed her Family Medicine Residency at Oklahoma State University Medical Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 2011.  Her interests are in primary care sports medicine and osteopathic manipulation.  She continues to incorporate both into her practice as well as teach residents and future physicians.

Dan Day, DO

Dan Day, DO was born in Rochester, New York and attended Penn State University for his undergraduate degree. He completed Medical School at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and Residency in Family Practice at Wilson Memorial Hospital in Johnson City, New York.  He’s spent most of his life involved in sports and was thrilled to continue his medical training in the VT/VCOM Sports Medicine Fellowship. He is also certified in acupuncture and incorporates it and the OMM skills developed in our program in his practice.

Brad McCrady, DO

Brad McCrady, DO has been a southwestern Virginia resident for most of his life, graduating from Northside High School. Dr. McCrady went on to play football at Bridgewater College and is a member of the inaugural graduating class at VCOM.  His osteopathic rotating internship was at Heart of Lancaster Regional Medical Center in Lititz, Pennsylvania and he completed his physical medicine & rehabilitation residency at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio.  Dr. McCrady's sports medicine interests include strength and conditioning and neurologic injuries in sports. He was very excited to be back in the region and to care for the athletes of Virginia Tech and the surrounding schools. 

2011 Sports Medicine Fellows

Amy Doolan, DO

Amy W. Doolan, DO received her BS in Biology and her MS Ed. from Virginia Tech, in Blacksburg, Virginia. She then graduated from the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2007 with her Osteopathic medical degree. Dr. Doolan completed her Internship and Family Medicine Residency in 2010 at Carilion Clinic in Roanoke, Virginia and her Primary Care/Sports Medicine fellowship at Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine in July 2011.

Crystal Dyer, MD

Crystal Dyer, M.D. received her B.S. from East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, Tennessee. She then graduated from James H. Quillen College of Medicine in 2006 with her medical degree. Dr. Dyer completed her residency in Family Medicine at East Tennessee State University in Bristol. Tennessee before coming to the fellowship program. After completing her fellowship, she returned to Tennessee, where she practices Family and Sports Medicine.

Saunora Prom, DO

Saunora Prom, DO received his B.S. degree from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia. He went on to obtain his Doctor of Osteopathy degree from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2006. From there he completed a Family Medicine residency in Newport News, Virginia at Riverside Regional Medical Center in 2009. He continued his osteopathic training by completing an OMM/NMM +1 fellowship at UMDNJ-SOM. His interests include OMM in the athlete, concussions and injury prevention. Upon completion of his fellowship, he returned to Riverside Regional Medical Center, where he is integrating teaching, sports medicine and OMM in his practice.

2010 Sports Medicine Fellows

Matthew Boyer, DO

Matthew Boyer, DO received his B.S. from Missouri Southern State University, in Joplin, Missouri. He then graduated from Oklahoma State University Center for Health Sciences College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1998 with his osteopathic medical degree. Dr. Boyer completed his internship at Hillcrest Hospital and his residency in Emergency Medicine at St. Michael's Hospital, both in Oklahoma City. Dr. Boyer then became an attending physician in emergency medicine in Joplin, Missouri. He competed his sports medicine fellowship program at the Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine and Virginia Tech and will move on to practice Sports/Musculoskeletal Medicine in Connecticut.

Jarrod Harrall, DO

Jarrod Harrall, DO received his B.S. from Oklahoma State University, in Stillwater, Oklahoma. He then graduated from Oklahoma State University Center for Health Sciences College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2006 with his osteopathic medical degree. Dr. Harrall completed his residency in Family Medicine at the University of Missouri - Kansas City School of Medicine in Kansas City, Missouri. He completed his sports medicine fellowship at the Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine and Virginia Tech. Dr. Harrall returned to Kansas City to work in both Family Medicine and Sports Medicine with local college and professional organizations.

Jonathan Tait, DO

Jonathan Tait received his undergraduate education in Biology from Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan. He went on to obtain his doctoral degree at Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2004. He completed his internship at Henry Ford Hospital in Warren, Michigan and his residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan (Wayne State University / Detroit Medical Center) in Detroit, Michigan. Following his residency, Dr. Tait received additional subspecialty training with an Interventional Spine fellowship at Rehabilitation Physicians, P.C. of Novi, Michigan.  Dr. Tait is now board certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation with expertise in low back and spine injuries. He completed his sports medicine fellowship at the Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine and Virginia Tech and moved on to practice at the University of Arizona and the Arizona Institute for Sports Medicine.

Greg Beato, DO

Greg Beato, DO, recently completed his sports medicine fellowship at Edward Via Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine and Virginia Tech.  He remains in the Blacksburg area, where he practices both Internal Medicine and non-surgical sports medicine and orthopedics.

2008 Sports Medicine Fellow

Tom Goodwin, DO

Tom Goodwin, DO received his bachelors degree in biomedical sciences from Western Michigan University in 2000 before obtaining his osteopathic medicine degree from Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2004. He completed his family medicine residency with sports medicine emphasis at Metro Health Hospital in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Dr. Goodwin completed his sports medicine fellowship at the Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2008. Currently, he is practicing Family and Sports Medicine in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

2007 Sports Medicine Fellows

Sarah McGinley-Turner, DO

Sarah McGinley Turner, DO, completed her B.S. degree in Biology at Mount Saint Mary's University where she also played Division I NCAA Soccer. She received her osteopathic medical degree in 2003 from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. She completed her family medicine residency at Broward General Medical Center, affiliated with NOVA Southeastern College of Osteopathic Medicine. She completed her sports medicine fellowship at the Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine and Virginia Tech.  Upon completion of her fellowship, she served as one of the primary care sports medicine team physicians at Virginia Tech.  In the summer of 2010, Dr. Turner relocated to North Carolina to be with her husband, Billy, who is a Staff Sergeant Medic in the U.S. Army Special Forces and stationed at Fort Bragg in Fayetteville, North Carolina.  Dr. Turner continues to provide primary care, sports and osteopathic manipulative medicine to soldiers and their family members who are stationed at Fort Bragg at the Roscoe Robinson Health Clinic. 

Mark Rogers, DO, MA

After finishing his Bachelor’s degree at the University of North Caroline Charlotte, Dr. Rogers completed a Master’s degree in Health Care Ethics from Duquesne University in Pittsburg. He then received his Osteopathic Medicine degree from Des Moines University-Osteopathic Medical Center. For his Family Medicine residency training, he worked at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill until 2006 and went on to complete a Sports Medicine fellowship at Edward Via Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine and Virginia Tech in 2007

John Daniel Elliott, DO

John Daniel Elliott, DO, completed his B.S. degree in Biology at Grace College in Winona Lake, Indiana where he was an Academic All-American basketball player. He completed his osteopathic medical training at the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine and followed that up with his family medicine residency at Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News, Virginia. He completed his fellowship in Sports Medicine at the Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine and Virginia Tech in July, 2006. He now practices Family and Sports Medicine in the Newport News area.

Phillip B. Arnold, DO

Phillip B. Arnold, DO graduated from Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin with a degree in biology and went on to receive his medical degree from Des Moines University.  He attended residency in Family Medicine at the University of Wisconsin, Madison/Baraboo and then completed a fellowship in Sports Medicine at the Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine and Virginia Tech University in Blacksburg, Virginia.  He now practices Family and Sports Medicine in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin and is one of the primary medical officers for MountainVision, Inc. in Denver, Colorado where he attends two international mountaineering/trekking expeditions a year.
