The curriculum at VCOM is innovative and modern. Students assimilate knowledge through instruction which is lecture based or through online modules, reading, small group learning and discussion, laboratory and computer-based student learning clinical tutorials, anatomy and microbiology laboratory experiences, simulated clinical laboratory experiences, physical diagnosis laboratory experiences, and osteopathic manipulative medicine clinical laboratory experiences. Students begin inter-professional early clinical experiences one day per week in the later blocks of the second year and transition to predominately clinical experiences in the third and fourth year. The VCOM curriculum is directed toward the development of a primary care physician. The VCOM faculty believes whether a student chooses primary care or a medical specialty, he or she will benefit from broad based primary care knowledge and a whole patient approach to medical care. The VCOM curriculum includes the most modern medical diagnostic evaluations and evidence based medical care. The VCOM curriculum prepares students well to enter either an AOA or ACGME residency program. In addition, Osteopathic Principles and Manipulation are taught throughout the four years of the curriculum.
The art of simulation
The Simulation and Educational Technology Center was designed to provide a safe learning environment to promote humanism and professionalism in medicine, critical decision making, and clinical procedural competencies through manikin-based simulation, the Standardized Patient program, and the Clinical Skills program.
Care for those most in need
VCOM faculty and students provide care for patients in international, underserved areas while also fulfilling unique educational experiences. Through VCOM established clinics in Honduras, El Salvador and the Dominican Republic, along with other outreach trips, over 25,000 visits occur annually for patients who would otherwise have no access to healthcare.
Keep the athlete winning
Sports medicine residents in this fellowship training program will apply osteopathic principles in the evaluation and treatment of athletic patients while working with athletic trainers, orthopedic surgeons and other providers to create a holistic, comprehensive, team approach to the management of the patient.
