John K. Skelton Endowed Medical Scholarship

John Skelton has been a longtime Blacksburg resident who recognizes the need for physicians in the region. The scholarship award gives preference to students whose hometown residence is in the Commonwealth of Virginia, who excel academically, have financial need, and plan to return to do primary care in the state of Virginia (internal medicine, family medicine, pediatrics, or OB/GYN).

Julie W. Ghent Memorial Scholarship

The Julie W. Ghent Memorial Scholarship Fund was established by Julie’s loving family and Mid-Carolina AHEC. This scholarship honors the memory of Julie W. Ghent who worked as the Student Coordinator for VCOM-Carolinas host site Springs Memorial Hospital. 

Mary Black Medical Staff Endowed Scholarship

The Mary Black Medical Staff Endowed Scholarship is a need-based scholarship that acknowledges the early support of both the physicians and staff at Mary Black Hospital, which is now a part of the Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System.

New River Valley Health Foundation Endowed Medical Scholarship

Established in 2021 by members of the New River Valley Health Foundation, the endowed scholarship recognizes the academic excellence and contributions of VCOM-Virginia students who grew up in the New River Valley area (Carroll, Floyd, Giles, Montgomery, Pulaski, Wythe Counties or the City of Radford).

Randal "R.J." Kirk Endowed Medical Scholarship

The Randall "R.J." Kirk Endowed Medical Scholarship, established by Mr. Kirk, seeks to recognize and reward VCOM medical students who embody the values of osteopathic medicine and who graduated from a high school in southwest Virginia. 

Sam Zigrossi Memorial Scholarship Fund

In memory of Samuel Zigrossi, a VCOM-Auburn Class of 2020 medical student who passed away in 2018, this scholarship honors Sam’s contributions to VCOM, including the support he gave to his classmates and his many contributions to the citizens and patients he served as an active student in VCOM’s local and international outreach programs.

The Margaret and Jimmi Narong Palmieri Rural Health Scholarship

The Margaret and Jimmi Narong Palmieri Rural Health Scholarship Fund was established by the friends and family of Margaret and Jimmi Palmieri for first, second, and third year VCOM-Virginia students whose career plans are to practice medicine in towns with populations under 15,000 in rural Virginia or Appalachia.

The Per Yngve Brolinson, DO, Rural Family Medicine Scholarship

The Scholarship is established to honor the memory of Per Yngve Brolinson, DO. It was instituted by his family, including his son, Per Gunnar Brolinson, DO, Vice Provost of Research and family medicine/sports medicine physician for the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM) and Virginia Tech, and Gunnar’s wife, Lesia Brolinson.

The Sower Scholarship

The Sower Scholarship, based on the Bible parable, was established by Drs. Frank and Jennifer Clark with the intention in assisting VCOM in maintaining and improving the education benefits that all students receive from a diverse study body. 

William B. and Ann F. Holtzman Endowed Medical Scholarship Fund

The William B. and Ann F. Holtzman Endowed Medical Scholarship Fund was established by the donors for a second, third, or fourth year medical student in good academic standing at VCOM. Preference is given to a student who plans to do primary care (Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Pediatrics or OB-GYN) and is a student whose home residence is from an area where Holtzman Oil Corporation does business. Holtzman Corporation currently operates in many locations in Virginia, West Virginia and Maryland.
