Project Title: Identifying and Mitigating the Underlying Causes of Physician and Nurse Burnout at UAB Health System
The goal of this research is to assess the level of burnout experienced by physicians and nurses at UAB Health System, determine what factors affect burnout and test the hypothesis that the EHR process is a major contributing factor to burnout. Once we have identified a process that is directly related to burnout (whether it is EHR or not), we will apply techniques from lean engineering to streamline, simplify and error-proof that process. Then after launching a pilot of the new process, we will measure the impact of those changes on burnout metrics. This research will be innovative because it will be the first to look for a connection between specific tasks (EHR procedures) and burnout in nurses and physicians, and then attempt to mitigate burnout by improving the processes related to those tasks.
