Class of 2024 VCOM-Louisiana alumnus Trey Skains is already making his mark in graduate medical education. During his internal medicine residency at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, Trey was appointed chief resident for the 2026–2027 academic year, an honor that reflects the trust of his peers and program leadership.

Being appointed chief resident means a great deal to me personally and professionally. It shows that my co-residents trust me to advocate for them and our residency program. I’m excited to work alongside them to drive positive change and to continue growing as a leader.

Trey Skains, DO

Trey credits VCOM with preparing him for both residency and this leadership role. As a medical student, he served as treasurer of the Student National Medical Association and as a chair member of the National Student Osteopathic Medical Association Wellness Committee, experiences that strengthened his communication, advocacy, and organizational skills.

He also worked as a peer tutor in pathology, sparking a passion for medical education that led him to pursue a clinical educator track during residency. Today, Trey lectures first-year residents and participates in academic medicine training, continuing the leadership and teaching pathway first nurtured at VCOM.

His appointment as chief resident reflects the mission-driven preparation of VCOM graduates and their readiness to lead, teach, and serve at every stage of their careers.
