Throughout her medical education journey, Taylor Bush, DO, VCOM–Auburn ‘25, showed incredible resilience and determination—graduating on time and reaching her goal of becoming a physician despite becoming a mom to twins in her third year. Today, she is completing her Internal Medicine residency at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Huntsville Regional Campus in Huntsville, Alabama.

Dr. Bush chose Internal Medicine for its breadth, complexity, and ever-changing clinical environment. “No two days are ever the same,” she said. “I love the fast-paced nature of inpatient medicine, and Internal Medicine gives me the flexibility to pursue fellowship training after residency.”

During the second week of her third year at VCOM-Auburn, Dr. Bush gave birth to twins and took time away from her studies to be home with them. Returning to medical school as a new mother required extraordinary determination and support from VCOM, friends, and family. “The transition from postpartum to full-time student and working mom was the hardest thing I have ever done,” she shared. “Making it to graduation, especially on time, was the most rewarding part of medical school,” she said. “Being able to catch up, walk across the stage, and earn my degree with my friends and family by my side meant everything to me.”

She credits VCOM-Auburn with preparing her for the demands of residency. Early clinical immersion helped ease the transition from student to intern. “VCOM-Auburn did an incredible job preparing me not only academically for residency, but logistically as well,” Dr. Bush explained. “Starting clinical rotations in third and fourth year while learning how to study for shelf exams and boards felt very similar to life as an intern.” That experience continues to benefit her as she balances long hospital days with ongoing board preparation. “Going to work every day while still preparing for COMLEX Level 3 can be exhausting,” she noted, “but having experienced that balance before has been incredibly beneficial.”

As she reflects on her journey, Dr. Bush offers words of encouragement to current medical students preparing for residency. “Enjoy this time,” she advised. “In just a few short months, you will walk into a patient’s room and no longer introduce yourself as a student. You will be their doctor.” She acknowledges that the transition can feel overwhelming, but reminds students to trust in their preparation. “Let yourself feel both the excitement and the nerves when starting residency,” she said. “It is overwhelming, but you deserve to be where you are.”

Dr. Taylor Bush’s story is a testament to perseverance, preparation, and passion for patient care. As she continues her training in Internal Medicine, she exemplifies the strength and dedication of VCOM-Auburn graduates and serves as an inspiration to those following in her footsteps.
