The VCOM Teacher of the Year awards recognize faculty members who are dedicated to educating, mentoring, and inspiring the students of VCOM. The second-year class was asked to vote for one faculty member from the Biomedical Affairs department and one faculty member from Clinical Affairs department to receive these awards. These awards are entirely based on student vote, with the candidates receiving the most votes receiving this recognition.
When considering faculty members’ teaching skills/style, enthusiasm for teaching, professionalism, approachability and availability for questions as well as mentoring outside of the classroom, students chose Dr. Powers, VCOM-Carolinas Discipline Chair for OMM.
“Dr. Powers is one of my favorite professors given her energy and dedication to student performance in not only Osteopathic medicine, but also in the delivery of primary care disciplines. She places emphasis on student well-being over learning, which is a central, and necessary, prerequisite for adequate student learning.
