VCOM-Auburn experienced another excellent Match Day this past Friday, March 17, with 100 percent of the participating students from the Class of 2023 matching.
Match Day is the day that the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) releases the results of all the student placements into residency positions, or where students “matched.” Upcoming physicians train in certain specialties for several years during their residencies, so this event has a huge impact on a student’s future as a physician.
VCOM-Auburn Dean Heath Parker, DO, noted that VCOM has a long tradition of fulfilling its mission, while focusing on rural and underserved healthcare needs.
At VCOM-Auburn everything we do is mission-oriented, with a focus on Alabama and the surrounding states. With 40-50% of our students coming from Alabama, 70% from a contiguous state and approximately 60% from a rural or underserved area, our match success is no accident. We are equally as proud, however, of our students that find their way into non-primary specialties, as we know they will carry their passion and training of holistic, patient-centered care with them into their respective fields of practice.
Approximately 66 percent of students in the class of 2023 matched into primary care fields, an area of special emphasis for VCOM. This percentage includes thirty students matching to family medicine, thirty-nine matching to internal medicine, seventeen into pediatrics, and nine students matching to OB-GYN.
One of VCOM’s top goals is to recruit students with a strong desire to care for medically underserved populations, educate these students and subsequently return them to these underserved areas.
VCOM-Auburn saw a number of students match into residencies within the Southeast, with twenty-five students matching in the state of Alabama, twenty in Florida, twelve in Georgia, five in Kentucky, four in Louisiana, eight in Mississippi, one in North Carolina, eleven in South Carolina, ten in Tennessee, ten in Texas, and six students in the Virginia Commonwealth.
