Dr. Despins was born and raised in Herndon, Virginia. He completed his undergraduate training at the University of Notre Dame with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology. After graduating from college, he traveled down to North Carolina where he became a member of the inaugural graduating class of the Jerry M. Wallace School of Osteopathic Medicine at Campbell University. In medical school, Dr. Despins developed an interest in neurology and musculoskeletal medicine which drove him to complete a residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) at CWRU/MetroHealth in Cleveland, Ohio. During residency, he knew he wanted to use the skills he developed and his passion for sports to complete a fellowship in Sports Medicine. Dr. Despins enjoys a variety of activities including running, competing in triathlons, playing broomball, playing board games and videogames, and watching movies. He is very excited to be joining the VCOM/Virginia Tech Sports Medicine Fellowship and looks forward to working with a variety of athletes from all disciplines.
