Research Interests

Through the support of the VCOM Department of Biomedical Affairs & Research, Dr. White just completed a two year product design cycle as the inventor of the Hybrid Resuscitation Training Vest wearable critical task trainer (www.HERTVEST.com). This device was provisionally patented in Nov 2019, with the full patent application submitted this month. During the development process, Dr. White, with the help of multiple VCOM students and faculty, was able to successfully demonstrate the device’s uniqueness and effectiveness in multiple practice settings, including wilderness medicine, emergency medicine, mass casualty incidents, and tactical combat casualty care. This device caught the interest of the Department of Homeland Security/FEMA Center for Domestic Preparedness and US Air Force Special Tactics Squadron, both entities incorporating the device into their training programs. The project was completed using multiple micro-manufacturing techniques and solutions, such as CAD/CAM; CNC routing; 3-D printing; platinum silicone, urethane foam, resins, and high density polyethylene mold making, casting, and finishing; and high volume low pressure (HVLP) painting and finishing. The overall goal throughout the prototyping, fabricating, testing, refining, and marketing process was to create a product that improves the fidelity and realism of medical simulation, better prepares students and physicians, and ultimately saves lives.
