The Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM) is pleased to announce that A. Alan Turfe has been named to the Advisory Board of the Carolinas campus. Mr. Turfe is the Chairman and CEO of J M Smith Corporation in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
“We are excited to have Alan join our board,” said Timothy J. Kowalski, DO, FACN, Dean of VCOM–Carolinas. “Alan brings a wealth of experience and a passion for osteopathic medical education to our board. His personal and professional values are very closely aligned with those of VCOM.”
“As the father of a physician currently in residency, I have the greatest admiration for those teaching our next generation of doctors,” said Mr. Turfe. “I wholeheartedly support all that VCOM stands for, especially their Mission of preparing physicians to meet the needs of medically underserved populations and promoting research. VCOM–Carolinas is a tremendous asset, not only for Spartanburg but our entire region. I am humbled and honored to have been appointed.”
Mr. Turfe joined J M Smith Corporation, South Carolina’s third-largest privately held company, in 2017 following a career spanning the healthcare and automotive industries. He began working on the line at GM while completing his college degree at the University of Michigan, where he went on to earn an MBA. Rising up through the ranks of GM, he was transferred to Paris, France as European Finance Director for GM’s Automotive Components Division and then CFO, GM Worldwide Purchasing and Logistics.
Following a decade with GM, Mr. Turfe joined Fisher Scientific as President of the Anatomical Pathology Group and then was named President of Micropump Inc. Mr. Turfe then became Senior Vice President and Chief Procurement Officer at Fresenius Medical Care, leveraging global manufacturing and distribution in pharmaceuticals and other medical categories.
He and his wife, Lenda enjoy being part of the Spartanburg community and are active in philanthropy.
