VCOM–Carolinas Hosts 4th Annual Research Day

The 4th annual Via Research Recognition Day at the Carolinas campus was held on April 26, 2019 with 260 registered attendees. This year, the Carolinas Research Day featured 46 posters, including seven from VCOM faculty.

Keynote speaker Ronald Moomaw, DO, FACN, Flight Surgeon and Psychiatrist at the Johnson Space Center, presented a lecture on Light, Fatigue, Nitric Acid and Space Flight. Dr. Moomaw has spent years working with NASA covering a broad scope of duties related to long duration manned space flight, including supporting crews and families of the International Space Station.

Edward B. Leof, PhD, Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and Medicine and Erivan K. Haub, Family Professor of Cancer Research at the Mayo Clinic, lectured on Targeting Profibrotic TGFbeta Signaling.

The afternoon consisted of juried presentations, as students shared their work and answered questions raised by fellow students and faculty.

At the closing awards ceremony, 14 participants were recognized for their research achievements in the areas of Biomedical, Case Reports, Clinical and Educational research.

The inaugural VCOM Researcher of the Year award was given to Jillian Bradley, PhD, who maintained an extramurally funded research program, successfully leveraged USDA Rural Education Achievement Program (REAP) funding into extramural awards, actively engaged students in research and produced proven scholarly output.
