Jan M. Willcox, DO, Dean of the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine  (VCOM) - Virginia Campus, has led mission trips and worked with procedural considerations and clinical site development of VCOM’s global outreach program since the founding of the medical school. With the groundswell of interest in medical outreach across the world, this topic is one of significance to physicians and students alike. Along with identifying common safety hazards, guidelines for overseas outreach projects that improve participant safety were reviewed. Dr. Willcox spoke at DOCARE’s annual seminar for training Global Health Outreach Directors.

As physicians, medical schools and students increasingly participate in global health initiatives with immersion, it is important that they be aware of potential hazards and work to assure there are plans in place to care for the caretakers as well as the patients.”

Dr. Willcox is a Fellow of the American Association of Osteopathic Family Practitioners (ACOFP). She serves as Chair of the International Collaborative for the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine and as a member of the Medical Outreach Committee for ACOFP.
