VCOM Focus Award Winners for 2015-2016

Segment 1 Winners - "Building on Excellence"

First Place

Chirag Patel, Class of 2018

Photo Title: “Towering Excellence”

Description: Towering Excellence was taken in July 2015 in London, England and depicts an iconic structure which has stood for 121 years. It demonstrates the strength of a country and relationships it has built to become a leading nation, with VCOM following a similar path.

Second Place

Chirag Patel, Class of 2018

Photo Title: “Freedom Tower”

Description: Freedom Tower was taken in July 2015 in New York City, NY and depicts an iconic American architecture that towers above all. It demonstrates the strength, adversity, and fortitude as America continues towards excellence much like an osteopathic physician does throughout his or her career.

Third Place

Zeba Khalid, Class of 2019

Photo Title: "Duck Enough"

Description: To me, “building on excellence” means remaining in a constant state of improvement. This process begins with introspection, ambition, and the desire to bring about change. And often, this process is one that begins with one entity or individual being brave enough to take the first steps alone. This picture was taken in the Constitution Gardens in Washington D.C. This picture reminds me of the loneliness and fear that often coincide with the beginning steps we take towards excellence in our lives, and also the gratitude and solace felt when looking back on our humble beginnings.

Segment 2 Winners - "Fostering Altruism"

Heart of Uganda Dare to leave the shore

First Place

Cameron Cook, Class of 2019

Photo Title: “The Path”

Description: We realize that we aren't the first generation to walk the path of altruism. We humbly tread where our mentors have trod. We courageously beckon to others to follow.

Second Place

Desiree Inman, Class of 2019

Photo Title: “Heart of Uganda”

Description: Uganda is the world’s youngest nation, with the average age of 15. This photo depicts a common sight seen in the rural regions of Gulu. This orphaned girl was left with the nearly impossible task of caring for her younger siblings. Her altruistic actions embody the philosophy of the people of Uganda.

This photo reflects VCOM’s mission to rural and international outreach. It is my hope that it will remind students of what it means to be selfless and to never forget why we want to serve others.

Third Place

Cameron Cook, Class of 2019

Photo Title: "Dare to Leave the Shore"

Description: A life devoted to altruism requires one to put others before self. It requires us to get outside of comfort zone.  We choose to devote ourselves to a cause beyond ourselves. We choose to leave the safety of the harbor and face the adventure of the open seas.
