My father has always told me, "Education and experience are two things that cannot be taken away from you." I tried to adhere to this adage and remember at all times; that while the work is rigorous, I am on an incredible journey and surrounded by thoughtful, motivated people.

Who or what has inspired you while at VCOM?

I drew inspiration from my family while at VCOM. My father has always told me, "Education and experience are two things that cannot be taken away from you." I tried to adhere to this adage and remember at all times; that while the work is rigorous, I am on an incredible journey and surrounded by thoughtful, motivated people.

How has the VCOM mission inspired you as a medical student?

"Globally minded, community-focused physicians," was the phrase that most resonated with me. Coming from a public health background; I've always wanted to focus on preventative medicine and how disease on the other side of the world could impact us here at home. With that being said, connecting with people in the community whom we serve has given me some of the most meaningful moments of my young career. I try to carry this motto with me every day.

Who or what inspired you to study medicine?

For as long as I can remember I have been fascinated with disease, so I went to college with the intention to study public health and epidemiology. After interning, I realized something was missing; and that was daily interaction with the people that were sick or hurt. I wanted one on one time with patients. For me, being on the front lines and helping patients and their loved ones is the most fulfilling profession I could think to pursue.

Why did you choose VCOM?

I chose VCOM because I felt it gave me access to all the opportunities healthcare had to offer. The statistics on matching for residency were unparalleled, and the pre-clinical education was exactly what I was looking for. It was not until I got on campus and began to meet students, faculty, and staff did I realize VCOM was much more than match statistics and a rigorous curriculum, but was a wonderful home and place to grow.

What do you enjoy most about living in the area around your campus?

Spartanburg, South Carolina gives you the best of both worlds. I am a small-town guy and enjoyed the close-knit community; however, you are only a short distance from Greenville and have access to all amenities a big city offers. I most enjoy the walking and bike trails scattered all over town and visiting local breweries.

What do you like to do in your free time?

My favorite hobby is coaching lacrosse. I played the game at a collegiate level and the sport gave me so much; I felt that it is only right to give a little back. Other than that, I enjoy working out, playing golf, and spending as much time as I can with my Labrador puppy.

Are you interested in a particular practice or specialty once you graduate? What has inspired your interest in this specialty?

One thing I have always appreciated about VCOM is the vast exposure they offer to different specialties and sub-specialties. Currently, I am undecided about which specialty I would like to pursue.  However, I am taking every opportunity to see what is out there and narrow down my options thanks to the clinical experiences offered by VCOM.
