The community is so supportive of all students. It's wonderful to have that kind of support. The local Starbucks near campus even writes motivational messages up on the board for us during exam weeks. It is a truly incredible place to be.
Who or what has inspired you while at VCOM?An experience that has inspired me as a student is getting to shadow with the sports medicine club. We performed the returning athlete physicals at Columbus State University. It was the first time I got to put forth the knowledge that I had been learning my entire first year of medical school. It was incredible to see just how much I had learned as I worked through the exams with the attending physicians. It helped solidify why you study so hard during the first year.
How has the VCOM mission-inspired you as a medical student?Preparing community and globally-minded physicians that serve the underserved inspires me as a medical student. During my time as an undergraduate student, I got to volunteer at Mercy Medical clinic. I worked phones, greeted patients, and scheduled patients for appointments. It is incredible to be able to go back there now as a medical student and work with attending physicians seeing patients. Giving back to the community of Auburn is a major reason why I wanted to stay in this community to attend medical school.
Who or what inspired you to study medicine?I was born with congenital heart disease, and it has been my experience as a congenital heart patient that has inspired me to study medicine. The many appointments as a child and my interest in science drew me into studying medicine.
Why did you choose VCOM?I chose VCOM because of my experience as an Auburn student. VCOM feels just like the Auburn Family, and when I got the opportunity to remain part of something like that, it was an offer I couldn't refuse.
What do you enjoy most about living in the area around your campus?I enjoy the family atmosphere. The community is so supportive of all students. It's wonderful to have that kind of support. The local Starbucks near campus even writes motivational messages up on the board for us during exam weeks. It is a truly incredible place to be.
What do you like to do in your free time?I like to cook, hang out with friends, travel, and work out. I am a big fan of the show Scrubs, and if I'm not studying, I am watching Scrubs.
Are you interested in a particular practice or specialty once you graduate? What has inspired your interest in this specialty?I am interested in Pediatric Cardiology and Family Medicine-Sports Medicine. My experience as a patient has drawn me to Pediatric Cardiology, but my opportunity to shadow sports medicine at VCOM- Auburn has opened my eyes to another incredible specialty. I am excited to get into rotations and start narrowing down what I want to do.
