Jamesha Lewis

I chose to go into medicine based on my lifelong natural interest in the self-healing body. My father, a Vietnam veteran, and mother are both recovering from serious illnesses that were potentially preventable which has inspired me to practice preventative care. A goal of mine is to change the representation of what a doctor is and looks like which will help my culture and the world I serve.

Jamesha LewisThe accomplishment I am proudest of is

The accomplishment I am proudest of is being accepted into medical school. Upon completion of medical school, I will be the first doctor in my family. I feel blessed to start a legacy of higher education in my family.

I want to help people because

I want to help people because many others have assisted me in my journey and I want to pay it forward. I went a long time without health care and seeing the struggle of my parents. My family was helped by doctors who just genuinely cared. It’s so important that when I have the means to help that use those means.

The reason I chose VCOM is

The reason I chose VCOM is the institution's priority to serve the underserved population through primary care and traveling to other countries for medical missions. I love the passion VCOM has for teaching preventative proactive medicine.  I also love that VCOM has a family-like atmosphere which I also feel will translate well into my professional practice.

I believe osteopathic physicians are important because

I believe osteopathic physicians are important because they focus on primary care through via holistic "hands-on" treatment. These methods are shaping the future of medicine. Medicine is becoming proactive rather than reactive and Osteopathic physicians are at the forefront of this change.

I enjoy living in Blacksburg because

I enjoy living in Blacksburg because the environment is conducive to learning with a wide variety of recreational outlets. The beautiful landscape of Blacksburg is peaceful and relaxing which is why I enjoy here. Medical school is stressful but this area is breath-taking.

For me, the most unforgettable moment in medical school was

For me, the most unforgettable moment in medical school was the first day of school. It was a dream realized. This, in addition to the white coat ceremony, dissolved the doubts I had about being smart or good enough to be a doctor. Finishing our program with everyone saying the Osteopathic Oath affirmed my place at VCOM now and forever.

My friends would tell you that

My friends would tell you that I am intelligent, kind, and thoughtful.

I am interested in women and children's health because

I am interested in women and children's health because of shadowing experiences where I learned first-hand from an OB-GYN and pediatrician. The birth of a baby is a blessing and I would like to facilitate the experience.

When I am not studying, I enjoy

When I am not studying, I enjoy cooking new things. I am very interested in international cuisine. When it’s warm enough enjoy spending time at the beach, not really swimming but kicking it on the sand playing beach volleyball tournaments. I am pretty competitive person. I enjoy trying new things and finding new adventures.

My future plans include

My future plans include going on medical missions in Africa and South America to work with women and children either practicing as a pediatrician or OB-GYN. I also plan to move back to Richmond so I could be closer to my soon-to-be husband and family. I have big dreams of opening a non-profit women and children’s clinic/shelter in Richmond also.
