Cellular Biology and Physiology

At VCOM, the discipline of cellular biology and  physiology provides students with the foundation for health and function of the human body in preparation for advanced study of pathophysiology and medicine. The goal of faculty in this discipline is to provide students with an understanding of the general physiologic principles responsible for health and disease in the human body.

The Magnolia Research Center (MRC) at VCOM-Carolinas is a nearly 4,000 square foot facility, housing the microbiology and immunology department of the college. The MRC has lab space for microbiological work and laboratory instruction in support of the VCOM curriculum, and labs are also used for research with special emphasis on autoimmune disease, tumor immunology, viral pathogenesis, immunotherapies and simulated microgravity studies. This facility provides outstanding opportunities for VCOM students to supplement their training with fundamental research aimed at the discovery of mechanisms underlying disease, as well as opportunities for developing therapeutic approaches to ultimately improve quality of life.
