Health Services

VCOM assures that diagnostic, preventive, and therapeutic health services are available to students through agreements with local primary care health providers 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.  The agreements include primary care health providers to serve students within the campus community and in the communities of our core hospital sites.  Health services are confidential.

Health professionals providing health services to students, through a physician-patient relationship, must recuse him/herself from the academic assessment or promotion of the student receiving those services.  While the faculty at VCOM abide by the rule, students should not engage healthcare providers who are involved in their academic assessment or promotion to assure this does not unknowingly occur.

VCOM OMS 3 and OMS 4 students may participate in rotations with healthcare providers that offer healthcare services to other VCOM students.  In this case, OMS 3 and OMS 4 students may not participate in another student’s healthcare and may not view another student’s health record.  In addition, if any student being treated identifies that an OMS 3 or OMS 4 student is present in the room, he or she should request the student not be involved in their care, informing the student and the physician providing the care.  As the VCOM clinical training sites (physician or student) may not identify the patient as a VCOM student, it is an expectation that students seeking healthcare services in these sites identify themselves as a VCOM student.

Health, Disability, and Liability Insurance

Health Insurance

Health insurance is a mandatory requirement for all VCOM students.  VCOM provides health insurance for its medical students and all VCOM students are automatically enrolled in the health insurance plan.  Medical students who do not wish to participate in VCOM’s health insurance program must seek and be approved for a waiver from participation.  Students who wish to obtain a waiver must present proof of health insurance at registration and annually thereafter, including immediately prior to third year clinical rotations.  Medical insurance must be carried through all four years for continued enrollment.  Students who fail to do so are subject to suspension.

The student health plan is a Preferred Provider Organization plan (PPO) through Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield. In addition to the major medical benefit, the plan provides full coverage for wellness care including annual routine physicals, well child care and immunizations. Once your annual deductible has been met, you will also meet your out of pocket maximum, then your plan will pay 100% of Covered Medical Expenses.

Cost to the Student/Premium for the Policy

There is no additional cost to the student for this health plan.  In most cases, if the student chooses, he/she may hold another insurance plan and the two policies can work together.  However, it is not required to have another policy.  Important: Students on Medicaid cannot hold more than one policy.  It is imperative that you get information at orientation and take the appropriate steps if you are on Medicaid to avoid losing your benefits.

Dependent Eligibility

All VCOM students are automatically enrolled in the health insurance plan. If you have eligible dependents, you must register them online. You will be able to register your spouse or children on or after July 1st (returning students) or the first day of class (new students).

Obtaining Your ID Card/Filing and Reviewing Claims

  • To access your account, download the Sydney App or visit anthem.com
  • You will need your Student ID. If you don't know your Student ID, it can be found on the MyVCOM portal or for new students, you will be given your Student ID at orientation.
  • From the Sydney App or Anthem website, you can review claims and plan information, search for providers in your area and downloading a copy of your ID card.

Choosing Not to Participate Due to Medicaid Coverage

If you are on Medicaid, you must complete the process to waive VCOM's health insurance by August 31. Click on the 'Waive Today' button on the website https://rcmdstudentbenefits.com/vcom/

Failure to do so could result in you being ineligible and loss Medicaid coverage.

Choosing Not to Participate Due to Other Reasons

VCOM's health insurance plan is intended to provide all VCOM students with a strong benefit and assure coverage of all students. In most cases, if a student has another health insurance plan, that plan can work with the VCOM plan to provide an additional level of coverage. However, if a student chooses not to enroll, he/she should understand all conditions provided on the waive coverage page when completing the waiver.

Liability Insurance

Students currently enrolled as full-time students in good academic standing at VCOM and who are expected to graduate with the degree of Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine are covered by VCOM's liability insurance coverage on approved curriculum such as clinical rotations and required educational activities that are a part of the VCOM curriculum and as long as they are following the policies set forth by the institution.  Students should not participate in patient care without supervision and should not perform procedures without direct observation.  The coverage for students extends only to clinical situations where the care is performed as a part of the VCOM clinical program and when under the supervision of faculty.

Disability Insurance

As a VCOM student, the College provides the benefit of long-term disability insurance coverage for all current VCOM medical students. You are now covered for long term disability under a program called Med-Plus Advantage (MPA) underwritten by Standard Life Insurance Company. There is no cost to you for this valuable coverage; VCOM pays the premium. The plan is offered by the AMA Insurance Agency and covers more than 60,000 medical students nationwide. Here are just a few of the benefits:

  • $1,500 per month benefit
  • $225,000 student loan repayment in the event of a total disability
  • 90 day waiting period before benefits are payable
  • Benefits payable to your Social Security Normal Retirement Age (SSNRA)

To file an MPA disability claim, you can obtain a claim form by going to MPA Claim Form. Should you require assistance, please call the toll-free number on the claim form or you can contact Lisa Whaley at lisa.whaley@standard.com or 971-321-6946.

You will not receive a printed MPA disability certificate of insurance. You can obtain and print your certificate by accessing the MPA website at: www.medplusadvantage.com and enter the VCOM ID number: 645441.
